PROVIDENCE -- Despite opposition from Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, a key House committee on Wednesday approved a bill to give voters a chance, in November, to turn the Twin River and Newport Grand into privately owned, but "state-operated'' casinos ... The vote by the House Finance Committee was 14-to-1, with Rep. J. Russell Jackson, D-Newport casting the one dissenting vote against a bill that would force a vote on a casino his city's leaders have repeatedly said they do not want.
